What is your Passion?

When my father counsels people about their career choices, he asks them, "What's your Passion?"

It's a deep, deep question.

I'm busy wrestling with the distinct feeling that I'm compromising on my life. That I am not shooting for the great, but settling for what is merely good. The ironic, and terrible, part of it all is - I have no idea what the great is. I don't really know what I want to do.

So I'm chewing on this. What is my passion? How is it that a person can not even know what their passion is, what it is they care about, enjoy? But I'll give myself a little bit of forebearence as I admit that I really don't know.

I'm praying that God breathes some life and vision into this soul, and puts some real flesh on these dry bones.

Hey now Momma, I got no idea, but that won't stop from rollin' along and prayin' for light and life and lessons in love, love and dancing and drumming on the walls of the heart, land, country! God!

So what is your passion?

It took me a long time, and many dabblings in different interests to figure my passion out. I finally decided on the thing I kept coming back to - counseling children - but it's not a one-stop kind of passion. While I am pursuing that passion currently, I still have lots of ideas flying around in my head about how to really make it my own - by adding touches of the arts, my religious beliefs and lifetime learning to my practice. I feel it will always be changing slightly with my changing life, but at my core, I know that helping children is what will make my life meaningful. It's definitely a trial and error process and I have tried many things before coming to such a decision. Good luck in finding your passion!

Shoshana - it's nice to hear that you see your direction and that you feel the process is bringing you closer. I'm interested to hear about some of the things you tried and how you came around to what you've found.

Rebecca - It sounds like you feel like being passionate about your work makes you more involved and alive in your whole life! Awesome!

I have worked in administrative positions for many years, which finally gave me the impetus to do something that I cared about. While I was completing my BA, I considered many different avenues, including teaching (in many different fields), research, private practice, and others, but after talking to professionals in those fields, I realized that I wanted to do a combination of them all. I've worked with youth in the past, and I always loved it, and the longer I take counseling classes, the more I feel at home with it. School counseling is such a great blend of being in the educational environment, but getting to work one-on-one with students that I feel very comfortable with my choice. But again, I'll probably adapt it along the way to my various interests.

anyway, i have made some realizations about passion and such in recent weeks here in Ameraikay. Better over a coffee than on the blog.

But chew on this--- is your passion something OTHER than a career-type thing? Maybe your passion is looking at flowers or driving fast or eating soup.....
